Perry is a Chicago native, birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles included two roles in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on The ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mom. Her parents, however, did not permit her to perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the negative effects that stress could have on their daughter. Perry claims she never wanted to perform in high school but decided to take up performing as a form of social interaction while at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then caused Perry home to California and theater roles were readily available. The Other Place was performed by her and her mother in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. In 2017 she had a recurring role on The ABC Political thriller Scandal with her father. She was also cast in The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. She was cast in the role despite having a close familial connection to the character.
